Why bookkeepers keep a converter handy

Bank feed sync failure illustration

The Feed Breaks, or Misses Things

You're closing a client on Friday and the Chase feed stops syncing, or it drops a pending charge that posted later at a different amount. The PDF is the actual record. The feed is only an approximation.

Manual transaction entry illustration

Still Typing Transactions by Hand?

A client hands over a year of Chase PDFs and you start re-keying into a spreadsheet. It takes hours, and one missed digit throws off the whole reconciliation. Most tools that fix this make you upload sensitive client data to someone else's servers. You shouldn't have to choose between speed and where your clients' data ends up.

Chase format

From a Chase PDF to clean CSV

JPMorgan Chase statements are built to be read by people, not parsed by software, which is exactly why copy-paste falls apart. Docubrew is built around the Chase layout so the data lands clean.

01

Two completely different layouts for personal and business accounts

Personal statements use one Transaction Detail table with signed amounts and a running balance. Business statements split into sections with unsigned amounts and no balance column, varying by product.

02

Signed amounts in a single column (personal)

Personal statements use a single Amount column, positive for deposits and negative for withdrawals, with no separate credit and debit columns. Docubrew keeps the signs exactly as the PDF shows them.

03

Multi-line descriptions with embedded reference codes

Business ACH entries run three to four lines of originator names, IDs, and trace numbers. Docubrew rejoins them into one description.

04

Section totals and card-level summaries (business)

Business sections close with totals, and card products add per-card subtotals and an ATM & Debit Card Summary. None are transactions. Docubrew strips them and keeps only real transaction lines.

05

Checking Summary block on every statement

Every statement opens with a Checking Summary of beginning balance, category totals, and ending balance. It is not transaction data, so Docubrew skips it and starts at the transaction tables.

06

Continuation pages with repeated section headers

Multi-page statements reprint the section heading with "(continued)" plus the full column header row. Docubrew strips the repeats so you get one clean transaction list across all pages.

How to download your Chase statement as a PDF

1

Sign in to Chase Online at chase.com (or the Chase Mobile app. Use a desktop browser if you also want the activity export).

2

Open Account

Select the account you need from your accounts overview.

3

Statements

Open the menu and go to Statements & documents.

4

Select Month

Under Statements, pick the month you need. Chase shows the available date range for your account here, typically covering several years.

5

Download & Convert

Download the statement as a PDF, then convert it with Docubrew.

Chase's activity download exports recent activity as CSV, QFX (Quicken), or QBO (QuickBooks), not the formal monthly statement. For older periods the PDF is the only option, so a converter is the reliable way to get that data into a spreadsheet.

FAQ

Answers to your questions

How is this different from other bank statement converters?

Docubrew offers both a desktop app for local processing and an encrypted cloud option. Many converters are cloud-only, and others make you choose desktop or cloud up front. If you need control over where each client's data is processed, that per-job flexibility matters.

Can I convert several Chase statements at once?

Yes. Batch processing lets you upload dozens of statements in a single run and download each result as its own CSV. It's built for firms reconciling multiple clients each month, so you're not converting one PDF at a time. This also applies to Citibank's combined checking-and-savings statements: each account comes out as its own clean file.

Does it work with QuickBooks and Xero?

Yes. The CSV is formatted for direct import into QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks, and most accounting software that accepts CSV bank transactions. It's a clean import, not a live connection, so you stay in control of what goes into the books.

Is it safe to convert my bank statement here?

Yes. The desktop app parses your file entirely on your own machine, so nothing is uploaded or stored. The cloud option encrypts every upload and deletes files automatically within 24 hours.

Do you convert Chase credit card statements?

Not yet. Docubrew currently handles Citibank deposit-account statements, the checking and savings statements you download from Citibank Online. Credit card statement support isn't available at launch. If you need it, contact us at support@docubrew.com so we can gauge demand.

Can it convert scanned Chase statements?

Docubrew currently processes text-layer (native digital) PDF statements, the kind you download straight from Chase Online. Scanned and image-based PDF support is on the near-term roadmap. If that's blocking your workflow, contact us at support@docubrew.com and we'll let you know when it ships.

How accurate is the conversion?

Docubrew is near-perfect on digital (text-layer) PDF bank statements, the kind you download straight from Citibank's website. Every conversion ends with a preview step, so you can check the rows before you download. Nothing reaches your books unseen.

Does Docubrew handle both Chase personal and business statement formats?

Yes. Chase uses two different layouts: personal accounts use a single "Transaction Detail" table with signed amounts and a running balance, while business accounts group transactions by type (Deposits and Additions, ATM & Debit Card Withdrawals, Electronic Withdrawals, Fees) with unsigned amounts and section totals. Docubrew recognizes both formats and extracts each one cleanly, preserving the original column structure.

Does Chase let you download statements as CSV?

Chase's Statements & documents section provides monthly statements as PDF only, going back several years. The online banking activity page lets you download recent transactions as CSV, QFX (Quicken), or QBO (QuickBooks), but those are activity exports covering recent history, not the formal monthly statements. For the full statement record, including older periods beyond the activity window, PDF is the only option, and a converter is the reliable way to get that data into a spreadsheet.

How do I convert a Chase bank statement to CSV

Upload your Chase PDF statement to Docubrew, let the rule-based parser extract every transaction, and download the result as an Excel-ready CSV. On the desktop app the entire process runs on your own computer, so your statement is never uploaded anywhere.
